Every year, the U.S. spends more than $80 billion to incarcerate people, perpetuating harm and trauma particularly in Black, Brown, and low-income communities. Over the past few decades, private and public actors have found ways to exploit our criminal legal system and those it targets for their own gain. Worse yet, the public is often unknowingly implicated in these systems.
